Key Takeaways :
* $1B infrastructure commitment: Marlan Space, backed by UAE investment group IHC, is financing the 50-satellite constellation and related launches.
* AI moves into orbit: Instead of sending raw satellite data to Earth for processing, AI agents will analyse imagery directly in space and potentially generate alerts within seconds.
* Strategic technology stack: French AI company Mistral AI will provide the AI model layer, while Nvidia supplies the computing chips.
* UAE builds physical capability: Satellites will be assembled in Abu Dhabi through Orbitworks, the Loft–Marlan joint venture established to develop regional satellite-production capabilities.
Full Briefing :
The UAE is putting $1 billion of capital behind an AI-native space infrastructure platform, linking Gulf capital with French AI and European space capabilities.
The project, developed by Loft Orbital and financed by Marlan Space, will deploy 50 satellites capable of processing data directly in orbit. Rather than transmitting imagery back to Earth before analysis, onboard AI can identify events such as fires, infrastructure activity or other predefined signals and issue alerts almost immediately.
The technology stack is deliberately international: Mistral AI provides the AI layer, Nvidia supplies the computing hardware, Loft Orbital provides the satellite infrastructure and operations, while the satellites are assembled in Abu Dhabi through Orbitworks.
The commercial significance extends beyond satellite manufacturing. The constellation is intended to serve French, European and Emirati customers, with applications spanning infrastructure monitoring, Earth observation and other high-value intelligence requirements. The project already has contracts with several government entities, although the companies have not publicly identified them.
For the UAE, this represents a shift from investing in individual technologies toward building strategic technology infrastructure. Marlan Space had already established Orbitworks with Loft Orbital, including a 50,000-square-foot Abu Dhabi facility, creating a foundation for local satellite production and mission operations.
For France and Europe, the transaction provides substantial external capital for a space-and-AI capability at a time when European companies are seeking greater capacity in both sectors. The announcement also comes as Paris hosts the International Space Summit, where European space infrastructure and competitiveness are major themes.
